Σύμφωνα με αποκαλύψεις από το Wikileaks, ο πρέσβης των ΗΠΑ στη Γαλλία ανησυχούσε πως οι περιβαλλοντικοί νόμοι θα εμποδίσουν την εξάπλωση των γενετικώς τροποποιημένων («μεταλλαγμένα»). Οι ΗΠΑ μελετούσαν (ή μελετάνε ακόμα) την επιβολή κυρώσεων στην ΕΕ, για να την εξαναγκάσουν να δεχθεί τα γενετικώς τροποποιημένα τροφιμα. Συγκεκριμένα:
